What is this site for?

It is a free reference for students, teachers, travelers and anyone who wants an accurate account of Fannie Lou Hamer's life and the people and places around her. Pages answer the questions readers ask most, list key facts and end with sources. The lesson plan and Ruleville guide are meant to be printed and used.

Who runs it?

The FLH Info Editorial Team publishes the site as an independent, non-commercial project. The site was relaunched in 2026 under new management. Before that, the domain was used by a separate, unrelated organization; our page on the earlier owner explains this. We do not speak for Hamer, her family, her estate or any institution named on these pages.

How do we research?

We write every page in our own words from published sources and list those sources at the bottom of the page. We rely most on the SNCC Digital Gateway, the Mississippi Encyclopedia, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, the Library of Congress, the U.S. House Office of the Historian, the Civil Rights Movement Archive, university presses and established news organizations. When sources disagree, for example on the year Hamer married or the year the Freedom Farm closed, we say so. We quote Hamer sparingly and only from documented speeches and testimony.

What are our rules about people and photographs?

We profile living people only through their public work, and we do not publish portraits of anyone. The photographs on the site show places, documents and landscapes, all used under their licenses and credited on each page and on the photo credits page.

Why are the page addresses unusual?

Many pages keep the addresses that schools, libraries and other sites have linked to for years, such as memorial.html or hamer_statue.html. Keeping them means those links still lead somewhere useful. Old documents from earlier versions of the domain are not republished; their addresses now lead to the closest page on the same subject.

How is the site funded?

It is not funded by readers. We take no donations, sell no merchandise, carry no advertising and use no analytics or cookies. See our note on donations.
