Fannie Lou Hamer was so willing to continue the fight for
freedom and voters' right that even after being shot at and
forced to move off of W. D. Marlowe's plantation, she
declared she would continue to keep moving. She exclaimed,
"If I fall, I'll fall 5 feet 4 inches forward in the fight
for freedom."
Hamer suffered severely from the 1964 jail
house beating in Winona, MS but she did so because she
knew there was a brighter day ahead. President Barack
Obama is a true testament to Mrs. Hamer's willingness to
encounter numerous death threats for a better America. Her
testimonial before the Credentials Committee at the
National Democratic Convention in 1964 proved to be an
eye opening opportunity for America to hear how African
Americans were being treated in the South if they dared
tried to register to vote. Hamer, a Field Secretary of SNCC,
never turned around regardless of the dangers she feared
was ahead.

The City of Ruleville, MS has designated Hamer's
Campaign Manager and fellow SNCCer, Charles McLaurin,
as Project Director for a
Fannie Lou Hamer Statue to be
located at
